College Drinking: 5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Drink in College

college-binge-drinkingCollege life. Most envision late nights, awesome roommates, good times, and lots of drinking. However, people don’t think about the failed tests, the binge drinking, and the hangovers. Now, there isn’t anything wrong with a little drink to help you unwind after a long week of tests and assignments. But college students should look at the reasons why they should avoid binge drinking. Here are 5 reasons why you should avoid college drinking.

College drinking won’t make you happy

Sure, there are tons of beer ads that display college drinking carelessly; but what they don’t show are the negative repercussions from college drinking. Drinking shouldn’t be the source of your happiness. You are young and carefree! You don’t need the booze!

You can die from binge drinking

Alcohol accounts for the most common cause of death in young people under the age of 26. Because your inhibitions are let down with alcohol, you will be more prone to doing silly things such as drinking and driving. About 50% of all fatal car crashes involve alcohol. Don’t let this happen to you. If you choose to drink, always make sure to have a sober buddy with you.

College drinking leads to date rape

Date rape is very common when college students are intoxicated. In fact, nearly 100,000 college students are victims of alcohol-related sexual assaults or date-rape every single year. When you are intoxicated, you really have no sense of what is happening around you. To prevent yourself from getting in harm’s way, if you necessarily have to drink, drink moderately. It can be scary waking up and finding out that you had sexual intercourse with someone that you didn’t consent to in the first place. When you drink, your judgement is impaired, and you are more likely to engage in unprotected sex and as a result, contract sexually transmitted diseases.

College drinking increases aggression

Statistics have shown that at least 700,000 college students are assaulted each year by other students who have been drinking. You don’t want to find yourself in front of a jury as a result of assaulting someone. Needless to say that will completely change your destiny for the worse.

Hangovers suck

The repercussions of college drinking are pretty bad. You don’t want to wake up with massive hangovers when you have class that day. a hangover will disable you for at least a few hours at a minimum. These precious hours could have been used studying or attending class and taking important notes. The buzz you feel when drinking certainly isn’t worth missing classes and failing exams as a result.

These are just a few reasons that you should consider when you are invited to a college party with drinks.
