How much Exercise do you Need if you Have a Sedentary Job?

Other data from the BLS indicated that self-employed individuals work in a home office a little more than 34% of the time. Even those in corporate America spend , on average, 12.2% of their hours working at their houses as well. This provides us with just a glimpse of how many people spend their business hours sitting as they work. Yes, in most cases, this would amount to holding a sedentary position.

Sometimes, when people are making money, they lose sight of other things that are just as important, such as their health. Mayo Clinic reports that people need at least 150 minutes per week of exercise, even if it’s just brisk walking a few minutes a day in order to provide the body with the kind of cardio that it requires. If you’re not doing that, you not only put yourself in the position of having low energy and a body that’s not as toned as you probably would like; you also put yourself at risk for many health conditions including coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, strokes and obesity. So, the bottom line is that if you have a sedentary job, you need about 30 minutes of moderate exercise on a daily basis.

Exercise is not Luxury – It’s a Necessity

Due to the demands of your schedule, it may be difficult to figure out how to put working out on your list of things to do. It’s understandable, but one thing to keep in mind is that exercise is not a luxury; it’s something that your mind, body and spirit need. Therefore, you must look for creative ways to make time to work out. A little bit of creative thinking will show you that it’s not as hard to do as you might think.

Tips for Sedentary Workers

If you work in an office setting, don’t look for the closest parking space. Park farther away so that you can get in a bit of a walk both in the morning and in the evening. If stairs are an option (and in most buildings, due to fire codes, they are), take those instead of the elevator. Another surefire winner is that if you’re not too far away from home, ride your bike to work instead of your using your car (you can find some great used ones on¬†Craigslist). Or, take the bus and get off a stop (several blocks away) from the one you would normally pick. Not only do these two options conserve gas, but they also provide you with a wonderful supply of energy for your work day.

If you work from home, this frees you up to even more possibilities. Pop in a fitness DVD tape in the morning or during your lunch hour and exercise to it. Make the commitment to do your own lawn work. If you have children, play outside with them once they get home from school in the afternoons. Or take three 10-minute breaks throughout the day to run on your treadmill, or jump ropes to increase your heart rate and get your metabolism going.
