Healthy Breakfasts: Low On Calories, High On Taste

healthy breakfastWherever we go for health information, we read that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It gives us energy for the day and it wakes up our metabolism, which is very important, we are told, for keeping us healthy and in shape. While being healthy is great and giving our bodies a good jump-start to the day is an absolute must, a lot of breakfast recipes are undeniably quite boring. What alternatives can we incorporate into our breakfasts to give us a great tasting, yet still health conscious, kick-start to the day?

Green and red chillies

Green and red chillies are high in anti-oxidants, and are a prominent part of many detox plans. Many healthy breakfast smoothie recipes incorporate finely chopped chillies, but what other options are available to those brave enough to have a hot kick with their breakfast?

Add finely chopped chillies to any cooked breakfast for an extra taste sensation. My favorite option is to place finely chopped chillies into a scrambled egg mixture, before cooking. This adds a great twist to a traditional healthy breakfast, and works equally great in an omelet, too.

Bagels with a difference

Bagels are avoided by many due to their perceived stodginess and similarity to bread, however by packing it full of the right ingredients you will create an amazing breakfast which will give you a boost to last the entire day.  Try toasting a cinnamon bagel, and packing it smoked salmon, spinach, thickly sliced tomato, and a sliced hard-boiled egg.  This breakfast idea will give you an excellent energy boost and provide you with a meal rich in protein and omega 3 fatty acids, to get you through the day. This is a great recipe for anyone, however can be especially useful for those looking to lose weight or build muscle mass.

Basic breakfast ideas

If you are one of the many people who understands the importance of breakfast but just never has time to eat it, think of preparing it the night before.  If you need to pick it up on the way out of the door, simply chop a selection of fruit, along with small cubes of cheese.  This will give you a nutritious boost of key proteins and complex carbohydrates to help hold your appetite till your morning snack time around 10 or 11am.

If you are someone who enjoys eating fish for breakfast, why not experiment and come away from the traditional offering of kippers or mackerel? Fish is a popular breakfast meal in Japan, and would make a refreshing change to most breakfast ideas you read about. This is also excellent for an early morning protein blast, and keeps your body on its toes if you eat a lot of fish in the evenings.
