UV Rays: Learn to Protect Your Skin

UV RaysDid you know that ultraviolet rays are the greatest threat to your skins health?  A large percentage of our skin’s aging is due to these damaging sun rays.  Sun damage is cumulative and years of sun exposure can take years to show up, sometimes up to forty. Ages ago, little was known about the dangers of UV (ultraviolet) radiation and the consequences of getting too much sun.  A suntan used to be thought of as a sign of good health.  Now, unfortunately, many sun lovers are paying a price for their sun addiction.

Understanding UV rays

There are two main types of UV rays:  UVA and UVB.  UVB is also known as the sunburn ray.  UVB rays target the top layer of the skin and their strength is determined by the time of day and year.  They are the strongest between the hours of 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. and they will do the most damage in the summer.  UVA rays, on the other hand, penetrate the skin deeper and their intensity remains constant throughout the day and year.  UVA rays are the culprit behind premature aging.  All those things you hate to see in the mirror such as wrinkles, age spots and saggy skin can be blamed on excessive exposure to UVA rays. While UVB radiation will cause you to burn and UVA to age, it is important to know that both types can cause skin cancer.

5 things to learn before you go out in the sun

  • Use a broad spectrum sunscreen.  This type of sunscreen will protect against both UVA and UVB radiation.
  • Wear a wide brim hat of at least three inches that will shade your face, neck and ears.  These areas are prime spots for skin cancer to occur.
  • Avoid the sun during peak hours and seek shade whenever possible.  An umbrella is a great way to provide portable shade.
  • Cover up by wearing UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) clothing.  Any item that carries a UPF tag has been tested for its sun protective ability.  Fabrics with a tight weave will also provide protection as well.
  • Wear sunglasses.  Choose a pair that will protect against 99 to 100 percent of UV rays.

New sun protection products available

As awareness of the importance of sun protection has grown, so has the list of products available to combat these dangerous rays.  Besides hats and sunscreen, unique items such as sun sleeves, sun gloves, nose guards and face shields are now available. These items are especially designed to offer maximum sun protection. The most important thing to remember is that no single product will provide 100 percent protection.  Combine products and practice sun safety measures to learn to save the skin you are in.
