Don’t think that the idea of working out too much is only for serious athletes. It can happen to anyone, and it’s even more dangerous for the Average Joe. At the very least, too much of the same activity leads to boredom, which means you’re more likely to quit.
More importantly, if you do too much of anything, your body gets used to it. One hour of lifting five days per week may provide less of a payoff than lifting three days a week for 30 minutes. The point is, when it comes to exercise, oftentimes less is more. Follow these tips the next time you think of hitting the gym (again).

That’s why runners have short days and why rest days are so important. Your body gains strength through recuperation, and you’re setting yourself up for failure and possible over-training syndrome if you don’t mix things up.
There’s not a single activity or sport that will truly work out all parts of your body in the best possible way. This is unfortunate, but it’s the reason why only doing one activity is counterproductive. It’s important that you choose activities that you enjoy and are challenging. Don’t get tunnel vision when it comes to working out.
The Benefits of a Break
Have you ever noticed that if you go a few days or a week without working out, your next workout is amazing? That’s not coincidence; it’s because your body had time to rest. If you’re working on building muscle mass, resting is when bulk happens. Your body uses rests to repair and come back stronger.
Of course, too much rest is also a bad thing. Your body will start to deteriorate and soften. Think of bodies like pool fences; in order to stay protected, you need to do proper maintenance and upkeep. Sometimes what was working just doesn’t anymore, and it might be time for a replacement.
Maybe right now you have the time to go to the gym every day for two hours. That’s unrealistic in the long haul, and after one hour you’re not doing your body any favors anyway. Every body has limits, and for many anything beyond an hour in the gym is a waste of time. Focus on getting the most out of your workout instead.
If you’re unsure where to start, work with a personal trainer. Make sure you choose one who’s reputable and has the education and background you deserve. From burning out to plateauing, your body is telling you something. Listen to it and see better results.
