New to Yoga? 5 Tricks to Have You Ready for Your Next Session

New To YogaFor many people, yoga has become a popular way to exercise and distress in this busy world of ours. While yoga can seem intimidating, it is really not difficult. Sri Krishnamacharya, a renowned yogi from long ago said ‘yoga is 99% practice and 1% theory’.

Tips For Your Yoga Experience

Once you have found a yoga class or routine, taking the time to practice the poses and trust your body, you can enjoy the many benefits of yoga—whether doing it on your own or participating in a class.

1. Eating

Don’t eat for two hours before your practice or class. If you are ravenous after work or haven’t had food in several hours, keep it very light—a few almonds, a banana or a small smoothie. That will be enough to keep you from feeling too faint during your practice.

2. Do Some Research

Know a few poses- before going to class, it is a good idea to research a little and become somewhat familiar with a few of the beginner poses. While this is not a necessity, it will help you feel less conspicuous and be able to participate in the class a little bit quicker.

3. Back of the Room

Place your mat in the back of the room- if you are a beginner in a yoga class, position yourself in the back of the room. This makes it easier for you to see others make the poses and follow along in order to learn.

4. Comfortable Clothing

Wear comfortable yet fitting clothing- if your clothes are too loose and baggy, they will get in your way. Baggy clothing also prevents your yoga instructor from being able to see your positioning and help you when necessary. Be comfortable, it is your yoga session.

5. Water is Your Friend

Drink lots of water- keeping hydrated is essential to in any exercise in order for the body to function well. Drink water before, during and after your yoga practice.

Yoga is Universal

Yoga works for people of all body types, even those with some physical issues. For example, if you suffer from foot issues such as plantar fasciitis, quality athletic tape can support your feet during yoga. If you suffer from high blood pressure or other medical problems, be sure to consult your doctor about yoga.

Yoga For Good Health

Yoga is a way to relieve stress on the body, stretch weary muscles and de-stress the mind. The most important thing about learning yoga is to own your yoga practice, make it your own. Practice, practice and more practice is the way to be successful in yoga.
