Puffy Eyes: Causes and Home Remedies

This depends on the cause of puffy eyes. Puffy eyes is a condition in which the tissue around the eyes gets swollen. As the skin around the eyes is sensitive and delicate, any minor cause can induce puffiness to it. Eye puffiness that is not caused by other eye conditions, is a temporary cosmetic problem, which can be treated and prevented with home remedies. Before we move on to home remedies for puffy eyes, let us first learn what causes puffy eyes.

Causes of puffy eyes

The causes of puffiness around the eyes can be varied.


As we age, the fragile skin around your eyes starts to lose elasticity, and the function of the lymphatic system gets disturbed. Lymphatic drainage system removes the excess fluid accumulated in that area. Retention of fluid and fat around the eyes give a puffy or baggy appearance to the under-eye area.

Fluid retention

Another common cause of puffiness around the eyes is fluid retention. Fluid retention in your eyes can be caused due to a number of conditions, which includes hormonal fluctuations (during menstruation and pregnancy), excessive alcohol intake, lack of sleep and excess consumption of salt. Alcohol and tobacco contains toxins that induce hormonal changes, stress and fatigue. This leads to retention of water around the eyes, which causes puffy eyes. Lack of sleep or oversleeping can also cause swelling of the tissues around the eyes.

Diet and nutrition

Excess consumption of foods rich in sodium and potassium will puff up the area around your eyes.

Allergic conditions

Exposure to allergens in the air or recurrent sinusitis can cause redness and lasting puffiness.

Make-up residue

Make-up, when left overnight, or even a bit too long can cause irritation and puffiness around the eyes.

Medical conditions

Apart from the above mentioned temporary conditions, puffy eyes can be a sign of some serious underlying medical condition. This includes Grave’s disease (hyperthyroidism), high blood pressure or kidney problem.

Home remedies for puffy eyes

If puffy eyes are due to any medical conditions, it is advisable to consult your health practitioner. If it is a temporary cosmetic problem, try these handy and effective tips to get rid of under eye bags.

Potato or cucumber slices

Slice a raw potato or cucumber (refrigerate them for couple of minutes) and place the sliced halves on your eyes. Cover your puffed areas for 15 to 20 minutes. Just a couple of ice cold slices on your eyes will reduce the puffiness and tighten the tone under the eye area.

Chamomile tea bags

Soak some chamomile tea bags in hot water, then rinse them with cold water. Put these cold tea bags on your eyes for twenty minutes. Lie back and relax with cool tea bags over your eyes. Tea contains ingredients that cause constriction of blood vessels.


Dip cotton pads in chilled milk and place on your eyes for 15 to 20 minutes. This will cool of your eyes and reduce water retention under the eyes.

Egg whites

Beat a few egg whites and apply it around your eyes with a brush. Egg whites will tighten and tone the skin around your eyes, and make it look less puffy.

Hot water and salt

Take half cup of warm water and mix half teaspoon of salt in it. Dip cotton pads in saline water and apply them on your puffy eyes for few minutes. Remove the cotton pads and dip them again in warm water and place them on your eyes. Repeat the process for couple of times.


Known for its beneficial effects on skin, strawberries help in reducing under eye bags. Strawberries contain antioxidants, which help in tightening the skin around the eyes. Cut couple of slices of strawberries and place them under the eyes for few minutes. Remove them and you will notice tremendous improvement.


Drink plenty of water to flush out the toxins and excess salt and prevent water retention in the body.
