Now, with so many myths about this condition and so many products marketed to those with acne, it can be hard to know how to treat it. Don’t Pick at your Pimples
This first don’t is very important and it is the one most people tend to ignore. It can be tempting to pick or squeeze pimples because it gives us the impression that we’re effectively sopping a pimple in its tracks. Unfortunately, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Picking or squeezing pimples can actually make them worse. They can become inflamed, grow larger, and get infected. In addition, popping a pimple actually spreads acne to other areas of your face.
Do Have a Healthy Lifestyle
Believe it or not, acne responds to things you do in your daily life besides washing your face. Our hormone levels are regulated by complex processes in the body and skewed levels ultimately affect the skin. Therefore, you should get at least 7 hours of sleep each night, drink plenty of water, and exercise regularly. As a result, your body will become more internally balanced and its largest organ—the skin—will reap the benefits.
Don’t Use Skincare Products too Much or too Often
Because acne is easily affected by factors besides washing your face, it is important not to go overboard with skincare products. First, you should limit the number of products you use. The different ingredients in your various skincare products can negatively interact with one another. You should also avoid using them too much or too often.
Most cleansers and other products only require a small amount per use and it is important not to exceed that amount. It is also counterproductive to wash your face more than 2 to 3 times a day. Any more than that and you begin stripping the skin of its natural defenses.
Do Know How to Care for your Skin
If you have acne, you should only be using gentle, mild cleansers. Any cleanser or other skincare product that is oil-based should be avoided at all costs. For ladies, this includes all oil-based cosmetics. For men, this means being careful about different shaving creams or after-shaves. If you use a moisturizer, it is absolutely important to make sure it is water-based.
The one exception to this rule is tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is very mild and gentle on skin and actually has antiseptic properties that can help clear up an infection. Products that contain natural fruit acids are also very good for skin. It is also important that your skin get some fresh air on a regular basis. Sunlight is essential for healthy skin, as long as it is not too much, of course.
In fact, if you have acne, you really don’t want to tan or sunbathe (unless you are covering your face entirely. This can be extremely harsh on acne or acne-prone skin. In the same way, you should protect your skin from harsh weather. This includes humid conditions as well as very dry conditions and even windy weather.
Don’t Touch Your Face
Throughout the course of a day, we all probably touch our faces much more than we would imagine. Anyone who has ever suffered from acne (how to shrink pores) knows how hard it is to pay attention to and resist this impulse. Yet, hard as it may be, it is critical that you keep your hands away from your face as much as possible. Also in the course of a day, our hands pick up a ton of bacteria.
While the majority of these bacteria would hardly do you any harm, coming into contact with acne can exacerbate the problem. Not to mention, touching your face also helps acne spread.
Don’t Expect a Miracle
Even with these tips, don’t expect your acne to disappear overnight. With so many factors involved, it is no wonder why all of these miracle acne products fail to work. But again, with so many factors, there is almost always something you could be doing (or not doing) to improve your skin. It is up to you to take care of yourself—face included—you ever hope to be rid of pimples.
