Kidney failure developed in 311 (20.9%) participants, with an average of follow ups being 14 yrs. The people with the highest diet acid load were 8.56 times more common and those with the middle dietary acid load was 3.8 times more common to suffer kidney failure than people with the lowest diet acid load.
In the other piece of research, a Japanese team led by lead researcher Eiichiro Kanda, M.D., of Tokyo Kyosai Hospital, also discovered a correlation between high diet acid load and the progression of chronic kidney disease. The main result of their study, which included almost 250 elderly chronic kidney disease patients (average age of 70.6 years), was a 25% drop in eGFR or starting dialysis. The study showed that people with the high diet acid load were twice as likely to have kidney failure as those with the lower diet acid load.
