Beat the Aging Process: Exercises to Improve the Five Senses

aging process

When faced with the alternative, most everybody wants to grow old. The trick is to grow old, and beat the aging process at the same time. The best way to do that is to take care of your five senses. If you can stimulate your sense of hearing, taste, smell, touch, and sight as you grow older, you will not only beat the aging process, but enjoy the journey.

Hearing

The percentage of people with hearing loss rises a good deal among those aged 65 and older. A good hearing aid is one obvious solution to the symptoms, however, a more simple aid may be a trip to the doctor’s office to get rid of impacted earwax, or a trip to the pharmacy to get earwax softening drops. Learn to use your sense of vision to help with hearing loss. In a conversation, face directly toward the other person, and focus on his or her mouth as they speak. It works to help you recognize words as they look on the lips.

Taste

If you’ve been less than stimulated by your meals lately, try this. Slow down. Eat more slowly and focus on the meal. Don’t douse your food with too much salt, or sugar and don’t drink too much alcohol before you begin a meal.

Smell

A sudden loss of a sense of smell should mean a trip to the doctor, who may find some underlying treatable condition. If you are a smoker, this can increase the problems. Foods rich in zinc may entice your sense of smell, such as oysters, dark chocolate, crab meat, and liver.

Touch

As we age, our sense of touch may lessen due to decreased blood flow, or nerve sensitivity, especially in severe weather. Research indicates that a sense of touch can be improved by focusing on the object. For instance, if you watch your hand as it touches a soft pillow, the touch will feel smoother and more pleasurable. The opposite is also true. If you don’t watch as you quickly remove a bandage from your arm, it won’t hurt as much.

Sight

Glasses and contact lenses of today can improve eyesight in a majority of older people. Vitamins A, B, C, and E are also used to improve sight, as are whole grains, vegetables, and fresh fruits. You should also wear sunglasses outdoors to protect your eyes from damage caused by ultraviolet rays. Another way to take care of your sense of sight is to consult with optometrists in Calgary about Eyeconx, as a way to improve aging eyes.

As you age, it can be frustrating and scary to see your body lose it’s youthful feeling and appearance. With a few tips however, you can slow the process down and continue to enjoy your life through experience in the five senses.
