Everyone who smokes knows how difficult it is to resist putting one in their mouth as soon as the cravings start, but at the end of the day you have two choices. You can smoke, or you can do something else. Have you ever tried doing something else when the urge to smoke started to get too hard to handle? You can train yourself to associate cigarette cravings with pain. Luckily you don’t need to endure terrible pain in order for this technique to work, but you might feel a little sharp pain every once in a while. You will need to find a thick elastic band and it should live on your wrist. Whenever you feel like smoking you should ping yourself as hard as possible. The pain will take your mind of smoking and you will eventually start to have negative feelings whenever you dream about putting a cigarette in your mouth.
Once you start craving nicotine the inner-voice inside your head will start going crazy. It will keep asking you if you’re going to give in. When you try to resist it your inner-voice will try to convince you otherwise. It will tell you to have one more because it will definitely be the last one. If you learn how to meditate it will make that inner-voice disappear. By the time you’ve finished your mind will feel fresh and you won’t feel like doing anything that will damage your health.
Eat some fruit
Some people want to smoke because they need something in their mouth. They’re used to having a cigarette dangling from their mouth, so it feels weird when there is nothing there. You can combat this by eating a piece of fruit, especially a citrus fruit because you wouldn’t want to smoke straight after eating an orange. This has an extra benefit because fruit is good for you, so by eating healthy food you won’t want to ruin it by sticking something in your mouth that is unhealthy.
Do something important
Everyone always seems to go into the zone when they’re doing something important. You forget about everything and hours can pass by before you realize you’ve not eating anything. If you start doing something important once you feel like having a smoke it will make you forget all about it, plus you might get a lot more important things done throughout the day. When you sit around doing nothing you won’t be able to think of anything else except your next draw.
Brush your teeth
Smoking straight after brushing your teeth is horrible and it will stop a lot of people from reaching for their packet. If you decide you want to smoke throughout the day you could run to the bathroom to brush your teeth. When the cravings don’t go away you should brush your teeth again. Eventually they will go away and your teeth might start to look white again after all those years of smoking. If you can’t brush your teeth at work you should just eat a really strong mint.
You always have a choice
I know it doesn’t seem like it at the time, but you always have a choice. Why don’t you start making the right choice from now on? Nobody is saying it’s going to be easy, but if you ever want to quit you need to push through the mental barrier you’ve created.
