7 Tips to Keep Your Skin Looking Younger

tips for younger skin

Healthy skin doesn’t just look great, but it’s one of the first things that show our era and lifestyle choices. As we age, everyone wants to look younger and have that fresh, revived feeling of youth again but standing the test of time can be difficult.

Unfortunately there are no miracles to stop ageing altogether, but we can take measures to slow it down. From what you eat, to the sun’s exposure and when you wash your face – there are small lifestyle changes that can make a big difference to help you look your absolute best at any age.

Fighting wrinkles and other signs of aging can seem almost impossible, especially with the busy lifestyles we live. But keeping your skin protected and hydrated isn’t as hard or time consuming as it may seem. We delve into some simple tips to help erase the signs of aging and boost your overall skin health – making your feel young and beautiful again.

1. Be UV Conscious

Whilst a small dose of vitamin C can be good for you, it’s all in moderation. Sun damage can rush the signs of aging and dry out your skin so stay safe by using SPF30+ sunblock – even on a cloudy day. During peak periods, it’s ideal to limit the amount of time you spend in direct sunlight. This will lower your risk of developing skin cancer, prevent sun spots and wrinkles and even out skin tone.

If you’re craving some summer color, forget about frying your skin in the sun and opt for a spray tan instead. Spray tanning is the easiest and healthiest way to look browner without damaging your skin. Once you find the perfect skin colour for you, keep it lasting longer by applying a tanning lotion at home.

For a radiant glow to your face, use skin illuminations or bronzing powders. You can also use specially designed tanning lotions for the face that help to add some summer color without baking under the sun’s harmful UV rays.

2. Eat a Balanced Diet

It’s not just about protecting your skin on the outside though, but eating nutrient-rich foods will help to fortify from the inside too.  Good fats like Omega-3 and antioxidants promote healthier and younger looking skin so up your intake of foods like fresh fruit, salmon, seeds, avocado and strawberries.

Limiting the bad fats and sugar will reduce breakouts and keep your skin looking fresh. Foods rich in vitamin A act as good anti-aging by stimulating skin cell growth and building collagen (a structural protein found in the skin which is essential for skin elasticity). For this natural skin boost, load up on your carrots and tomatoes.

3. Stress Less and Exercise More

Stress is one of the biggest causes of physical changes to the body that accelerate aging so find time to relax and unwind. When you stress, surges of the hormones adrenaline cause blood pressure to rise and the heart to beat faster – chronic doses of this adrenaline can take a heavy toll on both your physical and emotional health. When you’re in a stressful situation, learn to take a step back and breathe. Giving yourself 10 -20 minutes time out daily can work wonders in making you feel and look better, and reduce stress related disorders including anxiety, depression, insomnia and heart attacks.

If you’re one of those people that stress a lot, finding time to unwind during exercise can be the perfect solution. Exercise will help to give you more energy, thus improve your mood, stress levels and promote a healthier mind and body. Yoga is listed as one of the best anti-aging advantages as the breathing techniques oxygenate the cells and rid them of toxins. Even a 20 minute walk every day though can pump the blood through your body and keep things moving.

4. Drink Red Wine

Great news for wine lovers! There is plenty of evidence that a little red wine can offset a list of health problems and make your skin glow (yes!). The red wine benefits for skin comes from the antioxidants that work in protecting your skin and preventing it from aging.

A glass or two of red wine a day also helps in protecting your heart including strokes and attacks by preventing the accumulation of fat in the arteries. As red wine also contains melatonin, it can encourage a peaceful sleep by stimulating your body clock and keeping you healthy, no doubt this will also lower the stress levels too.

5. Moisturise, at the Right Times

Keeping your skin moist is vital for healthy looking, younger skin. Long hot showers, exposure to the sun, air conditioning and stress are all key things that can dry your skin out so it’s important you keep your face hydrated.

Hydrate from the inside out by keep your water intake high. Not only does water help to flush the toxins out of your body, but it will keep your skin supple and refreshed. On the outside, moisturising daily will help to strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier to improve the look of dry, aging skin.

The best time to moisturise is at night before going to bed. This way you skin can repair damage and lock in moisture without the daily dirt clogging up your pores.

6. Cut Down on Bad Habits

Excessive coffee drinking, smoking and drinking will all dry out your skin so if these are your guilty pleasures, try and cut down or drink plenty of water to help rehydrate your skin.

If you are a smoker, cut back or quit. Besides the associated dieses known in smoking, it can also accelerate the aging process. Overindulgence will contribute to your wrinkles, dilate blood vessels and add visible veins to your skin.

7. Update Your Routine

Refreshing the products you use will refresh your complexion. Whilst it’s easy to get attached to the products you love using, altering even one thing in your routine every 6 – 12 months will jump start more impressive skin improvements including tone and texture.

When you apply the same products consistently, over time your skin will slide into maintenance mode. Changing products with the season too, especially the moisturiser you use can help to rejuvenate the skin as well.
